So…what is a Vascular Birthmark?

A vascular birthmark is caused by a formation of lots of blood vessels under the skin. They normally appear within 1 month of birth and currently the exact cause is unknown. These birthmarks are also commonly known as a strawberry mark, a salmon patch or a port wine stain.

Most vascular birthmarks are not dangerous and do not cause any pain. But if you have ANY concerns regarding your vascular birthmark (for example it has changed colour or shape) please don’t hesitate to contact your doctor.

What is International Vascular Birthmark Month?

This month is all about raising awareness and offering support to those affected by a birthmark. Did you know that birthmarks are incredibly common? Often by the age of 10 a vascular birthmark will have faded or completely disappeared.

To help celebrate vascular birthmarks I thought I would share some photos from gorgeous little Finley’s studio session. He had such a cheeky little character and was BUBBLING with enthusiasm for his shoot!

During this shoot I saw a beautiful little boy who had so much love for his Mummy and Daddy! Isn’t his smile gorgeous? I love that you can see 2 teeth poking through already!

Little Finley has been taking the drug Propranolol to help reduce the size of his birthmark. Over the past few months his parents have seen such an incredible change. To find out more about treatments available in the UK through GOSH click here!
